Bancroft learned to smoke brisket and barbecue in South Texas, where he developing a deep appreciation and care for the meat and its procurement process.  He will be joined by Kayla Brack of the Schmid Family Ranch to discuss the importance of sourcing meats from regional farms whose practices produce quality meats.

The Schmid Family Ranch is a centennial farm on Wilson Mesa, about ten miles west of Telluride. The Ranch has been in operation since the family homesteaded in 1882. The Schmid Family strives to alter and improve the way our community consumes meat by offering a unique experience of being connected to the food we eat.

Wolfe Knives and Tahoe Kitchen Company will also be on site to show the proper slicing techniques to serve these beautiful cuts of meats.

Last but absolutely not least, plan on tasting several contemporary rifs on the old fashioned.  Yellow Rose Distilling, Dan Papa Rum and San Cosme will be on site to share some of the ever evolving versions of this forever classic.

For those that wish to stay on the vine during this event, Buckel Family Wines will be pouring their summer wines – perfect for standing over the grill or dining with friends in the back yard.

Beverage Menu:

“New” Fashioned & New Takes on Backyard Summer Wines

Zapatero Old Fashioned:

In this Mexican-influenced Old Fashioned riff, earthy mezcal is married with bourbon to create a complex spirit base. For body and sweetness, rather than using simple syrup, it calls for orgeat, made with sugar, almonds, and orange blossom water.

Brown Butter Old Fashioned:

If you’ve never tried a brown-butter-washed bourbon Old Fashioned, then drop whatever you’re doing and get to it. There are few flavors that pair better with bourbon than the rich nuttiness of brown butter. That bourbon base is combined with a complementary brown-sugar syrup and Angostura bitters before being garnished with the usual orange twist and a Luxardo maraschino cherry. Bourbon makes up the majority of this drink’s base, but it’s accented by two rums, honey and demerara syrups, and Angostura and Peychaud’s bitters. It reads very Sazerac in style, but is served over a large cube before being garnished with an orange twist to differentiate it from the other spirit-forward classic. If you tend to enjoy a sweeter flavor profile, this cocktail should suit your fancy and might just make you a rum convert in the process.

Pumpkin Spice Old Fashioned:

So-called “pumpkin spice”-flavored drinks have become so ubiquitous as to elicit eye rolls, but this Old Fashioned riff proves the flavor has merit when used wisely. This cocktail calls for a homemade syrup employing pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, brown sugar, and vanilla extract; just combine this liquid pumpkin pie with bourbon and orange bitters and let the autumnal sensation wash over you.

Glug Glug

Buckel Family Wine’s Glug Glug was made for kicking it with friends, enjoying it on the go, or celebrating a special occasion. The single, really a double single serve, is made with Riesling and Viognier grapes in the Petillant Natural style, a sparkling wine with sediment. It is light refreshing and a little wild.

2022 Rosé:

Buckel Family Wine Rosé is made from co-fermented Syrah, Viognier, and Merlot grapes that are hand harvested. This dry crisp Rosé has notes of guava, strawberry and rose petals. Smooth, fruity, and refreshing. Fermented for 29 days in 100% stainless steel.

2021 Cinsaut:

Cinsault is a Southern Rhone varietal often used for blending in red wine and rosé. We have taken a liking to this large grape for it's neon pink color, red fruit and warm baking spices that wrap around the palate. This versatile wine is refreshing on hot summer days and pairs nicely with fireside get-togethers of friends and family.  We’re going to get wild and serve this wine chilled – wait until you try it!
